From Vulnerable to Unstoppable: Shanita Three-Year Transformation

Updated: Jul 20

Have you ever heard story of the Dog and the Elephant who became pregnant at the same time?

The dog gave birth to a bunch of puppies after 9 weeks only, and then became pregnant again. This cycle continued, and in 18 months, the dog had given birth to several puppies.

Meanwhile, the elephant was still carrying her baby.

The dog approached the elephant and asked, "Are you sure you are pregnant? We became pregnant on the same date, and I've given birth multiple times, while you're still pregnant. What's going on?"

The elephant replied, ''What I am carrying is not a puppy but an elephant. I only give birth to one in two years. When my baby hits the ground, the earth feels it. When my baby crosses the road, human beings stop and watch in admiration. What I carry draws attention, what I carry is mighty and great."

In today's fast-paced world, many organizations and their donors seek quick fixes and are even proud of them.

But real, lasting transformation doesn’t work like that.

For us at Shanita, we understand it might take a decade or two for the children to become doctors and teachers, and we don't rush the process. Our motivation to wait that long comes from a different (Shocking!) type of transformation that happens within the first three years of a child in our program.

During this crucial period, we see children progress from a state of complete crisis and distress to a future full of promise, laying the foundation for their continued growth and success.

If you have time, let me tell you how we do it.

Year One: Healing and Adaptation

The first year at Shanita is all about laying the groundwork for transformation. Children entering our program often come from severe poverty and instability, facing both physical problems such as malnutrition and conditions like ulcers, as well as emotional damage from neglect, abandonment, and even domestic violence.

We begin with the basics—improving their health and physical well-being. Access to nutritious food, clean water, and medical support leads to a notable increase in health and strength and significant improvements in conditions like severe malnutrition, typhoid, and bacterial infections.

During the first year, the children also adapt to a new environment—a safe space.

They find stability and routine, allowing them to start the process of rebuilding trust. Feeling safe and loved is an essential step for their emotional recovery.

Year Two: Building Trust and Finding Purpose

The second year marks a period of deeper change as the children begin to trust again and find purpose. This year focuses on character development and rebuilding relationships.

The overall emotional well-being improves, as evidenced by behavior changes such as a reduced tendency to run away or exhibit anxiety-related actions.

There’s also a significant improvement in English language skills. Enhanced communication helps children express themselves better and engage more fully with their educational foundation.

Year Three: Confidence and Leadership

By the third year, the children transition from merely adapting to actively thriving in their new environment. They gain confidence and form strong, proven friendships, creating a supportive social network.

The children feel a sense of belonging and community, which further strengthens their emotional health.

In the third year the Educational achievements soar. Our data shows that most children excel academically, taking leadership roles in their studies. Their report card scores reflect substantial academic progress and a commitment to learning.

Consistency is key to maintaining the success achieved in the first three years. Continuous support and monitoring ensure that the progress made is not only sustained but also built upon, leading to a brighter and more secure future for each child.

As we continue to build on these foundations, we are more committed than ever to nurturing each child’s potential, ensuring they grow up not just to dream but to achieve. The transformation is profound, and the journey has just begun.
