Closer Than We Knew: Experiencing the Beauty of Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Valley National Park is one of Uganda’s most stunning hidden treasures, a place where golden savannahs stretch endlessly, antelopes wander gracefully, and giraffes graze in the distance. It’s a spot that attracts visitors from all over the world, but for most children in Karamoja, Kidepo is more like a faraway dream than something they could ever experience.

At SHANITA, we believe dreams shouldn’t stay out of reach. That’s why, as the 2024 school year came to an end, we packed a team of young champions for an unforgettable weekend in Kidepo. This trip wasn’t just about adventure—it was about bringing our children closer to the wonders right in their backyard.

From the 255 children we support, 20 were selected for this unique experience. The selection wasn’t just about grades; we wanted to celebrate growth, resilience, and character. These children earned their place through their dedication and commitment to becoming the best versions of themselves.

For most, it was their first time leaving their district. For Naru, it was even more special—it was her first time ever sitting in a car. Not even the bumpy ride from Moroto could dull her excitement as she peered out the window, eager to see what lay ahead.

The weekend was carefully planned to be fun, exciting, and full of learning. Game drives introduced the children to Uganda’s incredible wildlife, from elephants to colorful birds, while lessons with park rangers taught them about conservation and the delicate balance of nature.

In between, we held team-building games with a powerful theme: togetherness.

Just as nature thrives through harmony, so can we.

No matter our differences—whether in tribe, age, or background— The children learned that unity isn’t just important in nature—it’s the key to building strong communities and friendships.

As Teacher Paul often says, “Every moment is a chance to learn something new.” And that’s exactly what happened throughout the trip. Whether they were spotting zebras or working together in a team challenge, the children discovered lessons that will stay with them long after the weekend ended.

For the children, Kidepo Isn't just a place to visit—it is a place to belong. Standing in awe of the vast savannahs wasn’t just thrilling; it was a reminder of the beauty and richness of their homeland.

“I can't believe this is so close to home,” Lemukol said quietly, gazing out at the landscape.

This trip wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of our friends and partners:

  • Moran and HFI, who have been by our side every step of the way, providing the support and encouragement to make dreams like this a reality.

  • Kara-Tunga, for arranging seamless logistics and introducing us to new friendships and opportunities.

  • Wild Places Africa, Johan and Margeaux from Apoka Safari Lodge, who provided us with the best game viewers and knowledgeable guides.

  • To our staff, Awas Eveline (Social Worker) and Nangiro Paul (Teacher), thank you for your care, flexibility, and the amazing role models you were throughout the weekend. You gave our children an experience they’ll never forget.

Having such a network of friends, partners, and dedicated staff is a true blessing, and it’s because of you that we can give our children these life-changing experiences.

This trip reminded us all that the wonders of Uganda aren’t just for tourists—they belong to the children of Karamoja too. And now, Kidepo is no longer just a dream for these 20 children—it’s a part of their story.

Next year, we hope to take another group of young champions on a journey like this, to help them see the beauty of their homeland and the potential within themselves. Together, we’re showing our children that nothing is truly out of reach.
